The Journey from Indie to Disney

Ryan T. Higgins, is my hero! Ok, that might be a little over the top, but I love his book MOTHER GOOSE BRUCE and I love the path his career is taking. From the hard work of successfully self-publishing his stories to a 2-book deal with Disney-Hyperion. After listening to this episode you’re going to be routing for Ryan and Bruce.

Hi my name's Nick! And I enjoy stories told with words and images. In 2014 I started the Picturebooking Podcast, where I get to chat with the people behind my favorite stories. I spend my free time writing, drawing, painting and talking picture books. It’s a good life.

  2. OK, guys, you are SO much fun! I was LITERALLY smiling
through this entire podcast 😀 This is some of the BEST entertainment ever, so
thank you for that. So I’ll just comment on some random stuff…

Having your childhood bedroom as a studio right now is very
cool, I think, but I’m thinking the shed will be a dream spot for you. Love the
“school visits” aspect of you selling your books, though you did a LOT of them.
Phew! Got a kick out of the “It’s a Wonderful Life/friend in the ice” story,
but only because no one got hurt. You
guys cracked me up with the whole “Creative Drive” and “Tandem Bikes” interview
stuff lol. Just a bit concerned about the potential “crash” (high OR low speed)
aspect 😉 And I’m SO, SO, SOOOooooo excited about HOTEL BRUCE!!!!! 😀 😀 😀 The
thought of even more Bruce books is thrilling—not kidding! I told you I
bought Bruce the instant I read it ‘cause it’s SO brilliant, it’s the epitome
of a great picture book in EVERY way 😀 Glad to hear the website’s back up, and
Nick, Congrats on “Belliott.” THANK you for including your daughter! 😀 <3

    1. Thanks Donna! I’m so glad you got a kick out of this interview. And I’m also super excited that Bruce is continuing on with future books! Such a great character.

And thank you for the congratulations! Melissa, Lilah and I are really excited about Belliott! Lilah use to say Elliott so well but has decided to shorten Baby Elliott to Belliott. She is just too much fun. And such a ham. Did you recognize the song she started singing in the end? Hint: Disney related.

      1. I got “Old MacDonald, but couldn’t tell the Disney. Totally tell me so I can listen again. I’m a HUGE Disney fan lol And the way she says “yeah” reminds me of when my son was little 🙂

          1. Ah, yes! It’s a Small World! 😀 For about 22 years now, I’ve been doing face painting and for most gigs, I have a Disney CD I put together from my collection. That’s the opening song 😀 It’s great when the kids start singing along 🙂 Going to listen to Lilah again :D…

          2. You know what I just realized when I was listening to her again? Her hybrid “Baby Elliott=Belliott” could be Belly-ott considering where Elliott is 😀 hehehe Couldn’t resist!

          3. Well, I don’t think she’s thinking that, but WE can! 😀
