Don Tate is the author and illustrator of POET: THE REMARKABLE STORY OF GEORGE MOSES HORTON. I really enjoyed getting to talk to Don. He has had a long career making books for kids but POET is the first book he authored and illustrated.

This picture book is about a slave’s story. But it’s unlike any slave story I’ve ever been exposed too.

I just can’t stop thinking about George. This man who had such a passion for words that the repression of slavery couldn’t stop him from living his dream.

I am not a history buff and I know I don’t understand all the angles of African-American history. But stories like this one will be how my daughter will first learn about the subject of slavery and so having the opportunity to talk to Don about his book was an honor.
